Chapter Fifteen

Charlotte didn’t wake up until the afternoon, when she heard her phone buzz and forced her eyes open.

It was a text from Woody: Idris about to do a press conference, switch on the news channel.

Rubbing her eyes, she took the remote from her bedside table and switched the TV on. The press conference had already started, and scrolling text at the bottom of the screen stated that Idris had been found alive.

Idris was sitting behind a desk in what Charlotte presumed was a room in the Exeter police headquarters. Next to him sat a policeman in uniform. Judging by the number of stripes on his shoulder, he was a senior officer.

The police officer read from a sheet of paper. “In the early hours of last night we received a phone call from a resident on the outskirts of Exeter, informing us that Idris Beavin had been found near their property. Officers attended the scene and found Mr Beavin in the house, being cared for by the owners.

After interviewing Mr Beavin, we established that he had been left by the kidnappers in a country lane some distance away. He was shaken, but unharmed.

At this time, the identities of the kidnappers are not known. However, our investigation is ongoing and we hope to apprehend them in due course. If any members of the public have information about the kidnappers, we ask them to please come forward.

That is all the information I can give at this time. Now we will take questions.”

There was a brief pause before a reporter asked, “Idris, can you tell me how you’re feeling?”

Idris’s stubble was gone and his hair was neatly brushed. He wore a pale-blue shirt, but no tie. “I’m just relieved,” he said. “I’m not going to lie: it was a horrible experience. There were times I thought I’d not get out alive, and I’m very, very glad to be free.”

There was a constant click of cameras as Idris spoke. Charlotte could tell by the slight quaver in his voice that he was speaking from the heart. He was always a joker, looking for a laugh, but for once he was serious. Deep down, she felt a pang. It reminded her that despite their marriage being over, she still cared about him. That was annoying. She wanted to hate him, but she couldn’t.

A different journalist asked, “Do you know where you were held?”

“No idea, but it was in London, I think. When they first took me, they didn’t drive far.”

“How did you end up in Devon, then?” another reporter asked.

“I dunno. Maybe they fancied a short break by the sea,” Idris said, and laughed. Some of the reporters laughed too.

Charlotte tutted. Always the joker.

The police officer beside Idris spoke. “We are looking into why that was the case.”

“Could it be that the kidnapper had local connections?” asked another reporter.

“We can’t comment further at the moment,” said the police officer.

“Was there a ransom for your safe return, and was it paid?”

“They wanted all my money, but they didn’t get a penny,” Idris stated.
